Carpal Tunnel
The nerves that provide sensation to the arm can be compressed anywhere from the neck to the wrist which will cause numbness and tingling. True carpal tunnel is numbness and tingling in the thumb, index, and middle fingers and occurs when the median nerve is compressed in the wrist. If you are experiencing numbness and tingling in the whole hand, you made have the nerves pinched in the neck. Degenerative Disc Disease
Degenerative Disc Disease is when the disc that is found between the bones of the spine degenerates. As we get older, the disc loses its ability to retain water which is one of the reasons degeneration occurs. Degeneration also occurs due to wear and tear of the spine as we get older. The discs of the spine get water and nutrients through motion of the spine, if there is decreased motion, then the disc can start to degenerate. Chiropractors are trained for find joints that are not moving properly and help to restore motion. Restoring motion to these joints can prevent any further degeneration from occurring.
Headaches/ Migraines
There are multiple causes of headaches and migraines that include stress, diet, and poor posture. Headaches can also come from a misalignment in the cervical spine and tight neck muscles. Dr.Val will do a careful examination of your cervical spine to find out if the underlying cause of your headaches is from a misalignment. Neck Pain
There are many different causes of neck pain. The most common causes are poor posture, injuries from sports or car accidents, and poor sleeping habits. There has been an increase of poor neck posture with the increased use of technology as we are looking down on our phones and computers more often. Dr. Val will do an evaluation to find the cause of your neck pain and make a treatment plan accordingly. The treatment for neck pain can include a variety of techniques including hands on manual manipulation or using a tool to adjust the neck. Dr. Val may also give you some stretches and exercises you can do at home to help improve you neck pain.
Sciatica
Sciatic nerve irritation or sciatica is one of the most common conditions we treat as chiropractors. It can be present on its own or could be felt in association with low back pain. Sciatica is a symptom of a different underlying issue. There are multiple causes including spinal stenosis, herniated discs, and muscle spasms of the low back and gluteal region. The good news is that sciatica responds well to chiropractic care and other non-surgical treatments. The flexion distraction table we have in our office was designed specifically for people with sciatic pain and disc herniations.
Scoliosis
Scoliosis is a condition that is characterized by having a curve in the spine and is the most common spinal deformity. Scoliosis can be caused by muscle imbalances, degeneration in the spine, injuries to the spine, certain neuromuscular conditions, as well as idiopathic which means there is no specific cause for it. Chiropractic may not correct the curvature, but it will help people with scoliosis have a better quality of life. Chiropractic treatments for scoliosis includes diversified or instrument assisted adjustments, soft tissue work, stretching and strengthening exercises. Kinesiology tape application has also been shown to help people with scoliosis.
Shoulder Pain
Shoulder pain can be caused from muscle issues, poor posture, or something more serious such as a rotator cuff tear. Dr. Val will do specific muscle and orthopedic tests with you to determine the source of your individual pain. In some cases, x-rays or and MRI may be required to locate the exact source of your pain. If the cause of your shoulder pain is musculoskeletal, chiropractic can help! There are adjustments that can be done to the shoulder as well as specific exercises to strengthen the muscles of the shoulder.
Plantar Fasciitis
Did you know that chiropractors treat more than just the spine? We can also work on extremities as well! Plantar fasciitis is a condition that affects around 2 million Americans a year and is a condition that chiropractic can help. The plantar fascia is thick piece of soft tissue in the bottom of the foot that attaches the heel to the ball of the foot. Plantar fasciitis is when this tissue becomes inflamed and painful. It is characterized by sharp and stabbing pain in the bottom of the foot, particularly with the first few steps in the morning. We can help decrease plantar fasciitis pain by adjusting the joints in the feet, doing soft tissue work to the plantar fascia, applying therapeutic ultrasound, and applying kinesiology tape. There are also some exercises that we can give you to do at home to help decrease pain when you are not in the office.
